Going green is arguably the top new trend within a variety of industries. The conceptual ideology behind "going green" has been around for numerous decades. However, not until recent times has the mass population contributed to the demand for healthier products within the marketplace. So, what exactly is going green? As with any new corporate trend, if you ask 10 people, you will receive 10 different answers. The foundation will always remain constant "going green" is the acknowledgment and impact awareness of our environment. The products or services used within "going green" generally have an increase in price, but how do you know for certain you are receiving the nonhazardous and environmentally friendly products? What truly makes a service and a company green? How will these products or services impact your organization?

To Go Green or Not to Go Green - That, Is the Question

Problem. An EBS customer decided to implement "green" products within their facilities. However, not only was the organization unaware of the steps to achieve a "green" status but unsure of the impact of "going green" within their organization. The organization turned to EBS for support and information. Additionally, the organization wanted to ensure it was truly implementing a "going green" strategy and not simply placing green colors, copy and logos within their company to convey a new "green" image to the public simply as part of marketing campaigns as do many companies.

Resolution. A general assumption with "going green" is there will be an increased cost in products and services. While this sometimes is the case, these increased costs bring the benefit of increase profit margins for many companies through the positive impact on the organization's corporate image. As the general population continues a strong push towards environmentally friendly products and services, there are two results.

The first result is that consumers are more likely to purchase from companies that are environmentally friendly.

The second is that consumers are more likely to pay a higher price to ensure they are utilizing environmentally friendly companies.

The justification for an improved corporate image through "green" products can be seen within companies, such as Starbucks that uses recycled products and Bank of America, that have implemented a recycling and hybrid car initiative. With the positive impact of a "green" image having a strong proven track record, is it possible for some companies cut corners and claim to be "green" without truly making an initiative and exploit these environmental concerns? It absolutely is possible and common. However, "going green" in the correct manner without succumbing to the temptation to simply create a green logo or claim to recycle and use environmentally products has a far greater benefit that a false claim to exploit the initiative. Truly "green" companies can receive tax credits, rebates, reduction in maintenance (Labor Savings) and cost savings for energy efficiency. According to the Database of State Incentives for Renewable and Energy Efficiency (DSIRE), "going green" can increase the green in your pocket. EBS is dedicated to providing organizations that desire a "greener" approach to business with the products and tools need to implement a true "go green" strategy within their business. After implementing a proper "go green" initiative, the EBS customer was able to improve their corporate image, received a strong increase in a new customer base from consumers who prefer to purchase from "green" companies, and gained significant cost savings for transitioning to a "greener" office environment.

So, how did we assist this organization? First, we found the business print and discarded hundreds of paper per day, as well as aluminum cans from visiting customers. We acquired recycled café amenities and installed new recycling bins, and ensured facility trash was sent to a recycling facility. Next, through our maintenance schedule, we ensured all fixtures and lamps were replaced with higher efficiency bulbs. There were some initial costs, but the rate of return from electrical consumption savings per month totaled to 4 months. Never the less, high efficiency lamps also require less maintenance. Lastly, all cleaning materials have been replaced with non-allergenic approved (U.S. EPA) materials. There many different paths to "Go-Green."
